The biggest memory buyer rejects the concerns over semiconductor memory oversupply

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia and head of the world's largest memory-buying company, has dismissed concerns about a potential memory oversupply in 2029. He also emphasized that when it comes to memory, more is better. This is positive news for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the world's leading memory manufacturers. In an interview with CNBC on October 22 (local time) at Nvidia's GTC developer conference in Berlin, Germany, Huang was asked about the possibility of a memory oversupply. He responded, “I don't think so. The great thing about memory is that more is better,” predicting continued growth in memory demand. His remarks are seen as a rebuttal to predictions that a memory oversupply in 2029 could bring the current semiconductor boom to an end. Traditionally, the semiconductor industry has experienced recurring cycles of expansion and contraction. However, some analysts argue that the surge in demand driven by the AI infrastructure boom is disrupting this traditional cycle.Huang also emphasized the importance of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which has become a key component of AI chips. “We will be using it for years to come. We also plan to continue using large quantities of low-power memory, such as LPDDR,” he said.As the CEO of the world's largest memory buyer publicly forecasts rising demand, market concerns over a potential oversupply are expected to ease considerably. This could also alleviate some concerns about the future growth prospects of Korean memory manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.Samsung Electronics reportedly set a new quarterly operating profit record of 100 trillion won this year, while its operating profit for next year is forecast to reach an astronomical 555 trillion won. SK Hynix has also continued to break its own earnings records. However, Huang also expressed interest in Chinese memory products. When asked whether Nvidia would be willing to use products from China's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), he replied, “Of course, we are open-minded.”He praised China's remarkable capabilities in fundamental infrastructure technologies. He also argued that US restrictions on China had ultimately accelerated the development of China's domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, adding that American technology companies remain strong and are prepared to compete with anyone.Nevertheless, the US government remains cautious about American companies importing semiconductors from China, making the possibility of adoption uncertain. Some politicians are strongly calling for a ban on Chinese semiconductor imports. Apple has also expressed interest in using Chinese memory products, but its plans have been hindered by government opposition.Meanwhile, SK Hynix announced that it would abruptly suspend plans to list its second-tier subsidiary Solidigm in the United States. The company's shares fell by more than 2% early in the trading session, briefly dropping below 1.2 million won. However, the decline subsequently narrowed, and the share price recovered to 1.2 million won, even turning positive at one point during the session.▶원문 기사: 메모리 '최대 큰손'의 호언장담, '반도체 공급과잉 일축' (이코노미스트, 2026. 10. 23) ◆이코노미스트가 글로벌 차세대 경제 리더, 청소년 기자단 영 저널리스트와 함께합니다.

“Bank of Korea Unanimously Keeps Benchmark Interest Rate at 3.0% to examine Effect of Previous Hikes”

The Bank of Korea (BOK) has maintained its base interest rate at 3.0% to take a pause after two consecutive rate hikes. The decision has been made to examine the impact of previous cases and check on domestic and global uncertainties after the two cases in July and August. At its monetary policy meeting on October 22nd, all members of the Bank of Korea’s Monetary Policy Board have voted to keep the benchmark rate at 3.0%. The decision was unanimous. It could be inferred that the central bank decided to manage the tightening of the rate hike cycle, while also evaluating the effect of two previous cases. The BOK has cut the interest rates four times in the past, in October and November of 2024 and February and May of 2025. After the four cases, they held meetings and concurred on keeping it the same consecutively for eight times, in May 2026. It resumed on raising the benchmark rates in July after three and a half years of keeping them constant, due to a semiconductor-led economic recovery and inflation concerns rising from conflicts in the Middle East. Extra rate hikes continued in August. The BOK noted that exports and investments promoted the strong expansion of the domestic economy in its monetary policy statement, while inflation stayed elevated around 3% along with continued financial stability risks. Nevertheless, increased uncertainty about the Middle East conflicts and monetary and fiscal policies in economies caused the need to maintain rates while accounting for and evaluating external risks and impacts of previous hikes. The underlying reasons for the central bank to slow down the tightening of the rate hike cycle include inflationary trends and economic growth. High demand for semiconductors has further promoted exports and investment, while improving income conditions are expected to gradually strengthen the recovery in consumption. As a result, the BOK predicts economic growth in both 2026 and 2027 to significantly go beyond previous expectations in its August forecasts of 3.3% and 2.9%, respectively. In September, consumer price inflation reached 2.9%, while core inflation reached 2.8%, both remaining similar on the the upper end of 2%. Short-term inflation expectations among consumers also remained at approximately the same level. The BOK predicts inflation to stay higher than its target for some period of time due to the pass-through of cost pressures and rise in demand pressure. Consumer and core inflation for 2026 are estimated to correspond with August forecasts of 2.7% and 2.5%, while inflation in 2027 is projected to outdo previous expectations. There are existing uncertainties and variables including oil prices, exchange rates, the pace of domestic demand recovery and wage growth. The Monetary Policy Board will monitor economic growth while maintaining a policy stance to make sure that inflation stabilizes at least around the target level over the mid-term, while continuing to pay attention to financial stability. The board expects strong growth persistence of the Korean economy, supported by exports, investment and recovery in consumption, yet inflation is expected to exceed the target inflationary level for some time. It also cautioned financial imbalances in the Seoul housing market and household debt. Additional rate hikes will depend on inflation, economic conditions and financial stability risks.▶원문 기사: “인상 효과 점검” 한은, 기준금리 연 3.0%로 ‘만장일치 동결’ (이코노미스트, 2026. 10.22) ◆이코노미스트가 글로벌 차세대 경제 리더, 청소년 기자단 영 저널리스트와 함께합니다.

As environmental pollution, climate change, and ecosystem destruction become increasingly severe, questions are growing over whether existing environmental laws are sufficient to protect nature. In response to these concerns, the concept of the Rights of Nature has emerged. Rather than viewing nature merely as a resource for human use, the Rights of Nature represents a legal and philosophical approach that recognizes ecosystems and the natural environment as entities with rights of their own that deserve protection. In recent years, this discussion has taken a new form on Jeju Island, South Korea, where efforts are underway to recognize Gotjawal forests and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins as eco-legal person. An eco-legal person is a legal entity that grants a particular ecosystem or natural entity legal status, recognizing it as an independent subject of rights rather than merely human property or an object of protection. Proposals to recognize forests and animals as eco-legal persons raise an important question: Can we move beyond an anthropocentric legal system and redefine the relationship between humans and nature? These efforts are not limited to Jeju. Around the world, discussions continue over how the Rights of Nature can be incorporated into existing legal systems. Mexico, one of the world's most biodiverse countries, has become a particularly important setting for these discussions. Indigenous worldviews have played a significant role in shaping perspectives that regard humans and nature not as separate entities, but as interconnected parts of a larger whole. These traditional perspectives resonate with contemporary efforts to develop new legal approaches to protecting nature. What, then, does it actually mean to grant legal rights to nature? Where did the concept of the Rights of Nature originate, and what challenges arise when applying it to real-world legal systems? Furthermore, how can South Korea's discussion of eco-legal persons connect with the global Rights of Nature movement? To explore these questions, we interviewed Marco Antonio Beltrán Navarro, an environmental engineering expert and counselor with specialized knowledge of Mexico's environmental legal framework and Indigenous worldviews. Through this interview, we examined both the potential and limitations of the Rights of Nature and explored the significance of Jeju Island's efforts to designate South Korea's first eco-legal person within the broader global movement to redefine the relationship between humans and nature. Q: What led you to study the Rights of Nature?A: I became interested in the Rights of Nature because it represents a fundamental shift in how we think about law. Traditionally, the main question has been how humans can manage nature effectively. The Rights of Nature takes this a step further by asking whether ecosystems themselves should be recognized as subjects of rights. This challenges several assumptions deeply embedded in modern legal systems. Since I’m from Mexico, I realized that this concept was not entirely new. Indigenous peoples have long understood humans not as beings separate from nature, but as part of it. Studying the Rights of Nature has allowed me to connect modern legal innovation with ancient philosophical traditions that remain deeply relevant today.Q: Mexico is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. How do you think this rich biodiversity has influenced the development of the Rights of Nature movement in Mexico?A: I believe Mexico's remarkable biodiversity has created favorable conditions for the emergence of the Rights of Nature movement. This is partly thanks to the efforts of local communities and individuals who have worked to protect the environment. What makes Mexico particularly interesting is the intersection of biological and cultural diversity. The country is home to a wide range of Indigenous communities whose worldviews recognize rivers, forests, mountains, and animals as living entities deserving of respect. This cultural heritage has influenced academic discussions, civil society initiatives, and certain judicial decisions related to environmental protection.Q: What do you think is the most important lesson modern society should learn from Indigenous perspectives?A: I believe it begins with recognizing that humans are not the owners of nature, but rather beings who live within it as part of it. In many Indigenous traditions in Mexico, the relationship with nature is understood in terms of reciprocity rather than exploitation. Rights come with responsibilities, and human well-being and survival depend on maintaining a balance with the ecosystems that sustain life. This perspective does not mean rejecting scientific or technological progress. Instead, we need to recognize that progress should not be measured solely by economic growth, but also by whether we can preserve ecological balance for future generations.Q: What has been the greatest challenge in integrating Indigenous philosophies into modern legal systems?A: Fundamentally, the greatest challenge lies in translating fundamentally different worldviews into the language of law. Modern legal systems are generally structured around individual rights, property, and economic interests. Indigenous philosophies, on the other hand, often emphasize collective responsibility, interdependence, and the intrinsic value of ecosystems themselves. The goal should not be to replace one legal tradition with another, but to foster respectful dialogue between different legal and cultural traditions. To achieve this successfully, it is not enough to simply add Indigenous terms or concepts to existing laws. All communities must be given a genuine opportunity to participate in the process. “Environmental Laws Shaped by Human Standards Must Recognize Rights of Nature”Q: Why do you think granting legal rights to nature can be more effective than existing environmental protection laws?A: Existing environmental laws often focus on determining how much environmental damage can be tolerated. In contrast, recognizing the Rights of Nature changes the legal perspective through which we view the natural environment. Rather than treating ecosystems merely as objects to be protected, this approach recognizes them as subjects of rights entitled to remain healthy and be protected. This shift in perspective can strengthen judicial oversight, increase accountability, and encourage governments and society to consider the long-term health and resilience of ecosystems when making decisions. However, the Rights of Nature should not be viewed as a replacement for existing environmental laws. Instead, they can complement the existing legal framework by providing a new ethical and legal foundation for environmental governance.Q: You mentioned that recognizing nature as a living entity has influenced legal and institutional changes in Mexico. Could you explain how the Mexican Federal Constitution specifically addresses environmental protection and the relationship between humans and nature?A: The Mexican Constitution does not currently explicitly recognize the Rights of Nature. However, as this issue has increasingly come before the courts and more related cases have been brought forward, judicial decisions interpreting the Rights of Nature favorably have become more common. This has clearly expanded the discussion surrounding the Rights of Nature.Q: I don’t think simply recognizing the Rights of Nature will immediately transform the relationship between human and nature.A: That's right. Changing the law does not mean that everyone will immediately change their behavior. Cultural change is necessary to transform people's actions, and I believe education is essential to bringing about this change. This is what I consider the greatest challenge. In addition to changing laws and institutions to protect the Rights of Nature, we must also work to help more people understand their importance, just as you are doing now. Nature provides the resources we need to survive, and protecting it is also a way of giving back and recognizing the value of what we receive from it. Therefore, it is important to foster cultural change through education at every level, especially in elementary, middle, and high schools. We need to ensure that the idea of protecting nature becomes deeply rooted in people's values and behavior.Q: Do you have any advice for those who support Jeju Island’s efforts to establish Eco Legal Person in South Korea?A: I have been greatly inspired by the efforts taking place in Jeju because they demonstrate how local communities can contribute to global legal innovation. My advice is to continue building broad coalitions and partnerships that bring together scientists, legal scholars, policymakers, educators, people with traditional local knowledge where appropriate, and members of the public. Successfully establishing the Rights of Nature requires more than legal arguments alone. Public understanding and social legitimacy are equally important.Throughout the interview, Counselor Marco Beltrán emphasized that “the concept of the Rights of Nature goes beyond simply creating new laws.” Recognizing nature as a subject of rights means changing the way humans perceive the natural world. It requires not only changes in laws and institutions, but also shifts in public awareness and behavior. Legal recognition alone is not enough to ensure that the Rights of Nature leads to meaningful protection, because changing the law and changing how people treat nature are two different challenges. Ultimately, what is needed is a shift in awareness through education and a shared social understanding that protecting nature is a collective responsibility. As Mexico's experience demonstrates, efforts to redefine the relationship between humans and nature are emerging through the intersection of Indigenous worldviews and modern legal systems. Jeju Island's discussion of eco-legal persons is part of this broader global movement. Granting Gotjawal forests or Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins a new legal status would mean more than protecting a single species or ecosystem. It could also encourage society to consider the interconnected well-being of ecosystems and the human communities that depend on them. In particular, if scientific research and data are used to build public support, and diverse stakeholders—including citizens, scientists, legal experts, and policymakers—participate in the discussion, Jeju's efforts could lead to more tangible changes.Jeju Island is currently pursuing a plan to designate one of its iconic natural features, such as Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins or the Gotjawal forests, as South Korea’s first ecological legal person. Kang Seung-oh, director of the Marine and Fisheries Division at the Jeju Provincial Government, stated, “The ninth popularly elected Jeju provincial administration plans to prioritize the designation of tangible natural entities, such as Gotjawal forests, that are separate from residents’ everyday living areas, as ecological legal persons.”Discussions on designating South Korea's first eco-legal person are still ongoing. However, it is clear that the discussion itself is prompting society to reconsider the relationship between humans and nature.“Should nature be viewed merely as a resource for meeting human needs, or should it be recognized as a subject of rights that coexists with humanity?”The search for an answer to this question will extend beyond Jeju Island, becoming part of a broader global effort to grapple with how humanity will live alongside nature in the future.

Q. 자연의 권리(Rights of Nature)를 연구하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?A. A.그렇습니다.

Riding on K-Semiconductors, South Korea Cruises Toward the 'Dream of $1 Trillion in Exports'

South Korea set another record for the period in early October, remaining on track toward the long-dreamed-of $1 trillion (approximately 1,335 trillion won) in annual exports. Driven by strong semiconductor shipments, exports doubled from a year earlier.According to the Korea Customs Service on the 12th, exports for October 1–10 (preliminary, customs-clearance basis) came to $26.1 billion, up 102.0% from the same period last year. This is the largest amount ever for the equivalent period. The number of working days in the period was 5.5, two more than the 3.5 days a year earlier. Adjusted for working days, average daily exports were $4.75 billion, up 28.5% and also a record for the period.By item, semiconductor exports surged 170.9% to $12.2 billion, again a record for the period. Semiconductors accounted for 46.7% of total exports, up 11.9 percentage points from a year earlier.Exports of other major items also rose, including petroleum products (45.6%), passenger cars (82.7%), steel products (49.4%), and wireless communication devices (62.6%). Ship exports fell 13.4%.By country, exports to major markets including China (167.3%), the United States (159.9%), Vietnam (89.7%), Taiwan (2.6%), and the European Union (EU, 127.3%) increased. The top three destinations, China, the U.S., and Vietnam, accounted for 52.3% of exports.Adding exports through October 10 to the cumulative total for January–September brings this year’s exports to $840.6 billion. Reaching $1 trillion in annual exports is therefore within sight. So far, only three countries, the United States, China, and Germany, have achieved $1 trillion in annual exports. South Korea has already far surpassed last year’s full-year export total ($709.3 billion). The driving force behind Korea’s record-breaking exports is K-semiconductors. In September, semiconductor exports hit $60.3 billion, topping $60 billion in a single month for the first time ever.Kang Gam-chan, Director General for Trade and Investment at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, said, “Reaching $1 trillion looks very likely, and interest has shifted to the timing. If we keep posting around $100 billion a month for the next two months, I expect we could reach it in late November or early December.”Meanwhile, Korea’s imports for October 1–10 totaled $22.3 billion, up 65.5% year-on-year. By item, imports of crude oil (56.2%), semiconductors (66.7%), and gas (125.5%) rose, while imports of petroleum products fell 10.9%. Energy imports, including crude oil, gas, and coal, increased 64.8%, apparently reflecting higher crude oil import prices due to the situation in the Middle East. With exports exceeding imports, the trade balance recorded a surplus of $3.8 billion.▶원문 기사: K반도체 앞세운 한국, '꿈의 1조달러 수출' 향해 순항 (이코노미스트, 2026. 10. 12) ◆이코노미스트가 글로벌 차세대 경제 리더, 청소년 기자단 영 저널리스트와 함께합니다.

Tesla Roadster, Really Flew

Tesla presented the new sports car model ‘Roadster’, whose release had been postponed for around 9 years. It uses gas thrusters to fly over 5 cars or flip in mid-air, demonstrating driving performance that defies conventional ideas about cars.Tesla held the new Roadster model demonstration event at the SpaceX testing facility in McGregor on the 15th (local time). Elon Musk, Tesla Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and Franz von Holzhausen senior designer attended the event. The Roadster shown that day is a 2-seater sports car equipped with gas thrusters.Roadster is a symbolic model that marked the start of Tesla. It is the first car Tesla ever sold in 2008, as well as an electric sports car. Therefore, Musk, the CEO, has also shown incomparable affection for Roadster. Later in 2018, he sent the Roadster he actually drove into space on a SpaceX rocket. That car is currently orbiting around the Sun.Before the demonstration, the CEO said, “Although success is not guaranteed, I guarantee you engagement 100% .” The actual demo ended without any accidents or technical issues. Roadster initially climbed up along the circular track that rises into the sky like a roller coaster. It flipped in the middle of the track, landing on the road stably by operating its thrusters. In the continuing demo, it jumped across 5 vehicles, including a large truck. Roadster, which rapidly drove toward the cars, flew up into the air with gases being emitted, landing on the opposite side after crossing all the obstacles. It was because of the thrusters equipped in the car that Roadster could leap into the air. The car have thrusters that adjust its posture in mid-air and another main thruster at the rear. Musk explained that using the thrusters, the car can also fly like a rocket.Tesla and SpaceX engineers participated in the development process. Musk, the CEO, explained that he collaborated with engineers from both companies to create a vehicle that he had never even seen in movies, saying that it was his goal to create one that transcends James Bond’s car.Roadster is also supplied with a suction system that keeps it closely attached to the road. This means the car is designed with enough suction power to remain firmly attached to the road even when accelerating through corners at high speeds. The acceleration function also drew attention. Roadster recorded 0.81 seconds to reach 60 mph (approximately 97 km/h) from a stationary state. Musk achieved his acceleration goal of less than 1 second that he suggested in the past. The top speed is over 230 mph (approximately 370 km/h). Musk also estimates that it will be possible to achieve speeds above Mach 0.5, half the speed of sound, in the future. Tesla also revealed the car's rear spoiler rising up and transforming into a form suitable for high-speed driving. However, it remains uncertain whether all these functions can be used on public roads. Musk also stated that he was not sure whether the new Roadster would be legally allowed to drive on all roads. The demonstration on that day was conducted in an autonomous driving mode without a driver on board for safety reasons. The actual vehicle to be sold will be released in a form that allows people to drive it themselves. Musk, the CEO, announced that in the long term, Roadster would become the only manually driven vehicle produced by Tesla.Attention is now shifting to the actual release date. Musk stated that mass production of the new Roadster will begin in 2028.▶원문 기사: 테슬라 로드스터, 진짜 날았다 (이코노미스트, 2026. 10. 16) ◆이코노미스트가 글로벌 차세대 경제 리더, 청소년 기자단 영 저널리스트와 함께합니다.

Cheonan and Asan Semiconductor Designated as Specialized Complex…‘Cheonan 6th Industrial Complex’ Draws Attention as an Industrial Site

After Cheonan and Asan in Chungcheongnam-do were designated as semiconductor backend materials, parts, and equipment (MPE) specialized complexes, expectations for expansion of the regional high-tech industry is rising. As demand for related industry’s expansion of production facilities and new hubs is expected to increase, the Cheonan 6th Industrial Complex — the Pungse-myeon area of Dongnam-gu, Cheonan — is attracting attention as a new industrial site. Cheonan and Asan are home to Samsung Electronics facilities and companies related to semiconductor backend processing. With a development of the AI industry as well as demand for HBM and high-performance semiconductor, advanced packaging is becoming increasingly important. 7 regions of Cheonan and Asan are designated as semiconductor backend MPE specialized complexes. According to the plan, three hundred seventy billion KRW is planned to be government-financed and 400 billion KRW for 5 years by 2030. Through this, technology development, production capacity, and supply chain strengthening will be pursued. The semiconductor business cooperates with other industries for supply, manufacturing, automation equipment, and measurement. Based on these, if the business scale expands, factory construction or expansion and previous demands can affect cooperative industries. When considering new production bases, companies look not only at accessibility to major industrial hubs but also at land size, infrastructure, potential for future expansion, and logistics conditions.Cheonan 6th Industrial Complex is a general industrial complex in San 51, Pungse-myeon, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Republic of Korea. The total project area is approximately 966,633 ㎡, and around 633,160 ㎡ is used for industrial site. This is a Public-Private Partnership with Cheonan-si, which invested 20% of the business. The Cheonan Pungse General Industrial Complex linkage is also expected. The place is approximately 1,644,529㎡, which is around 408 acres. If the Cheonan 6th Industrial Complex is added, industrial land for manufacturing is expected to expand in southeastern Cheonan. In an aspect of collaboration with production and logistics infrastructure and existing industrial complexes, cooperation with enterprise and industry is also receiving attention. Cheonan 6th Industrial Complex is constructed based on semiconductor materials, mechanical equipment, and components, as well as electrical and electronic machinery and equipment automotive parts. The business that examines creation or transfer of industry can check based on eligible Industries, desired area, supply condition. An industry that is planning investment in equipment or expansion of production can also think of the site as a new production base, according to a corporate’s explanation. For traffic conditions, National Route 43 and Local Route 629 can be used including South Pungse IC and West Cheonan IC. Highway and arterial road accessibility is considered very crucial for raw materials procurement and product shipment in the efficiency aspect. The Cheonan 6th Industrial Complex is currently accepting pre-applications for industrial facility sites. Industries that want creation or transfer of industries can review the site based on eligible Industries, desired area, supply condition. While expansion of investment relevant to designation of specialized complex Cheonan and Asan semiconductor backend is being pursued, Cheonan 6th Industrial Complex will also attract manufacturers that look for new production bases based on the existing Poongse General Industrial Complex’s linkability and road accessibility.

Youth from Over 190 Countries Connected Through Robotics… FIRST Global Challenge Concludes in Incheon; South Korea Places 74th

An international stage where youth from around the world competed in technology and collaborated across borders through robotics has concluded in Incheon. The "2026 FIRST Global Challenge," which brought together high school-aged participants from over 190 countries, wrapped up after four days of competition, announced the top-winning teams, and confirmed Madrid, Spain, as the host city for next year’s event.Held from October 7 to 10 at Songdo ConvensiA in Incheon, this event is an international youth robotics competition organized by the U.S.-based non-profit, FIRST Global. The competition features youth representing their respective countries who test their robot design, construction, and programming skills while collaborating across borders to solve shared challenges. This marked the first time the competition was held in South Korea. The theme of this year's competition was "Igniting Innovation." Participants built and operated robots in matches designed around the global challenges of wildfire prevention, damage mitigation, and recovery. The event went beyond merely testing robot performance, encouraging participants to use technology to address real-world social issues. The winning alliance team consisted of four countries… Evaluating Both Technical Skills and Collaborative CapabilitiesThe victor of the gold medal in the tournament final was a coalition comprised of the teams from Venezuela, El Salvador, Uzbekistan, and Moldova. The silver medal went to a combined team from the UAE, Japan, Hong Kong, China, and Luxembourg, while the bronze medal was awarded to a team representing China, Turkmenistan, the Cayman Islands, and Türkiye.Countries achieved success across various individual categories as well. Mexico won the gold award for the "Albert Einstein Award," which recognizes overall excellence in the competition, while Uzbekistan took the gold for the "FIRST Global Grand Challenge Award," based on cumulative scores throughout the event. The gold award for innovation in the "Igniting Innovation NTE" program—an initiative focused on experiencing new technologies—went to the Cayman Islands.A notable aspect of this competition was the simultaneous presence of national rivalry and multinational cooperation. While participating teams competed as representatives of their respective nations, they also formed alliances with teams from other countries during the matches. The competition structure emphasized not only technical proficiency but also communication, problem-solving, and collaborative skills.South Korean Team Ranks 74th Overall: A Chance to Assess Global Competitiveness Beyond Just the ScoreThe South Korean team ranked 74th in the official standings. Based on the overall leaderboard, South Korea earned a total ranking score of 164.4 points across 11 matches.Beyond the symbolic significance of hosting this international competition in Korea for the first time, the results served as an opportunity to evaluate the nation's capabilities in youth robotics education and preparation for international competitions. However, it is difficult to fully assess the participating students' technical growth or educational achievements based solely on competition rankings. A comprehensive view is required, taking into account various factors such as robot design and construction, programming, match strategy, and international cooperation. The competition provided a platform for young people to develop competencies in science and technology through robotics and to gain experience in solving shared problems alongside participants from diverse cultural backgrounds. A key challenge remains to ensure that participation in this international event does not end as a one-time achievement, but leads to continued learning, research, and career exploration.will.i.am Attends… Expanding International Cooperation in AI and Robotics EducationArtist and tech entrepreneur will.i.am also attended the event. He serves as a board member of FIRST Global, founder and CEO of FYI.AI, and a Goodwill Ambassador for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) AI Skills Coalition.During the event, FIRST Global and the ITU’s "AI for Good" initiative announced plans to expand cooperation on robotics and AI education for youth. As part of this collaboration, FIRST Global will provide 60 Experiential Robotics Platform (XRP) kits to the teams that advance to the finals of the ITU’s "Robotics for Good Youth Challenge." These teams will compete in the final round during the "AI for Good Global Summit," scheduled for June 21–24, 2027, in Geneva, Switzerland. This initiative aims to bridge the experience gained at the international robotics competition with further studies in programming, AI, and engineering. It is significant for broadening the scope of international cooperation, ensuring that students have continued opportunities to learn and apply technological knowledge even after the competition concludes.Next Stop: Madrid… Continuing International Youth Technology ExchangeAt the closing ceremony, Madrid, Spain, was announced as the next host city for the 2027 FIRST Global Challenge. Launched in Washington, D.C., in 2017, the competition has traveled through various global cities—including Dubai, Geneva, Singapore, and Athens—before arriving in Incheon, where it will continue in Spain next year. This event demonstrated that robot competitions allow young people to develop technical skills while also experiencing international communication, cooperation, leadership, and resilience. Participants competed representing their respective nations yet collaborated to solve shared challenges.Although the 2026 competition in Incheon has concluded, the youths' technological endeavors and international exchanges will continue in Madrid. The South Korean team is now called upon to build on this experience by further honing its technical capabilities and strengthening its competitiveness on the global stage.

The number of foreign tourists visiting South Korea is continuously rising. In the first half of 2026, the number of foreign tourists exceeded 10.7 million, which is a historical record for South Korea in terms of foreign arrivals. From January to July, the number increased by more than 20% compared with the same period last year. However, the tourists these days tend to visit the same places as everyone else compared to the earlier years. People can find these trendy locations more easily through access to social media. In fact, the influence of Social media on K-culture is being considered as the major reason for this growth. Through SNS, foreigners engage with and develop an interest in K-culture, and are more likely to visit. Then what form of social media has driven the proliferation of Korean content including K-pop and K-dramas around the world? Social media, especially YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels, have done most of the work. According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in January, 64% of tourists first got to know about Korea through video platforms. On the other hand, 56.6% of tourists did so through social media. There may be some overlap, but both forms of media still have considerable influence.Short-form content increases the number of foreign tourist, and at the same time has a great economic impact on Korea. When foreigners come across Shorts and Reels that contain content about Korean food, fashion and culture, they become motivated to spend more on Korean products. These days, Korean influencers are major contributors to the expansion of the domestic marketing industry. SNS drives foreigners’ interests in K-culture and turns that interest into visits and consumption, becoming a vital part of Korea’s tourism industry. After their visit, foreign tourists started to upload their own short-form content, leading to more exposure of K-culture to foreigners. Then to what extent does this influence teenage tourists? Do Shorts and Reels actually have a great impact on their visit to Korea? How do foreign teenagers view Korea, and how has SNS influenced their spending? To investigate these questions further, I interviewed two 17-year-old tourists who had visited Korea: Kingsley Machin from the United Kingdom and Elvin Li from China. Where do you usually get information when planning a trip?Kingsley: Usually, I get most of my information online when I start planning a trip.Elvin: Most of the time, I look for tourist places in instagram reels, since there are many influencers sharing good information about Korean tourist places. My parents on the other hand often use google and travel blogs. How often do you watch short-form like TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or Instagram Reels? How often do you come across K-culture content?Kingsley: I used to watch short-form content quite often, but now that I’m in Y12 doing the IB, I barely watch it anymore. When I used to doomscroll on Instagram Reels, I didn’t really come across that much K-culture content since most of the content I watch is based in the USA. However, I’d occasionally see accounts like Korean Englishman on YouTube, but not that often.Elvin: Every day. Recently, my algorithm is mostly filled with short-form content about Korean tourist places to visit, food to eat, and products to buy. I’ve also recently seen content about Olive Young. What types of K-culture content do you usually come across, and does it make you more interested in visiting Korea?Kingsley: Most of the K-culture content I come across is food-related, especially when watching Korean Englishman. I really enjoy his vlogs and the videos where he tries different Korean foods, as I find it interesting seeing the different places he goes and the food he tries.Elvin: I mostly watch content about K-culture, K-food, and K-pop. I do think it encourages me and potentially other teenage tourists to visit Korea. I first got to know about Hannam-dong through Tiktok. I wanted to visit pop-up stores that I saw on Tiktok, and other SNS contents also made me want to try Korean food. How much does short-form content influence where you go, what you eat, or what you buy while traveling? Can you give an example?Kingsley: Personally, short-form content doesn’t really influence where I go since I’ve already been to most places in South Korea. However, it can influence what I want to eat or try. For example, I’ve seen the 두쫀쿠 online and it made me want to try it myself when I’m in Korea.Although it isn’t influenced by social media, I would like to visit North Korea one day because I’m interested in experiencing the cultural differences between North and South Korea and seeing how different life is on the other side of the peninsula.Elvin: I’ve never really thought about it before, but I guess there is to some extent. I saved some food recommendations from Instagram reels before visiting Korea to try them as soon as I arrived. When I also visited cafes that I saw from short form content but weren’t really popular among tourists, I still really liked them. Regardless of the significance of short-form content’s impact on his decision, the interview shows that social-media content not only advertises and promotes K-culture but creates great economic impact through tourism. Exposure to Korean goods and services through Reels and Shorts encourages tourist spending, leading to more short-form content about K-culture, which then helps Korea become a global tourist destination and generates further economic benefits.Despite the benefits that the surge in foreign tourism gives to Korea, there are some considerable problems caused by it too. Since SNS content only reveals the best parts, visitors are sometimes disappointed when they visit the places themselves. These days, tourists are becoming overcrowded in certain areas, especially in towns of Seoul that are densely packed with buildings and stores. This is creating inconvenience for not only foreign visitors but local residents in those areas. Therefore, the surge in tourism driven by Shorts and Reels might not be entirely beneficial to the whole of South Korea, Have you ever visited a place you saw on social media and found it very different from what you expected—for example, much more crowded or commercialized?Kingsley: Yes, the Jeju Green Tea Park. I had seen it on social media and expected it to be quite peaceful, but when I actually went, it was really crowded and felt much more touristy than I expected.Elvin: Yes, Hannam-dong. I could only watch short clips of pop-up stores, which looked quite uncrowded. However, so many foreign tourists like me had watched the same dessert, the same cafe and the same reel on SNS, and I had to wait in such a long queue. Overall, do you think short-form content has a positive or negative impact on tourism in Korea? Why?Kingsley: I think it has both positive and negative impacts. On the positive side, it can make people more interested in Korea by showing them Korean food, culture, and places they might not have known about before. However, it can also make certain places extremely crowded when they go viral, like the Jeju Green Tea Park. Overall, I think it’s positive for tourism, but it can become negative if too many people visit the same places because of social media.Elvin: First of all, I think the positive impact is greater. As foreign tourists like me are exposed to K-food, K-pop, and other Korean culture, we spend more and positive economic impact is created. Nevertheless, too much of this causes problems. If popular tourist places like Hannam-dong become too famous, overcrowding and congestion can cause problems for both the locals and tourists. I think tourists should start visiting a wider variety of places to prevent congestion and spread economic benefits over large areas. The short length of SNS content does not mean that it creates little impact but conversely it leaves greater influence on foreigners and are more attractive. Short-form content does not only stimulate tourists to visit Korea, but they also determine their destinations and consumption pattern by influencing trends; Ultimately, it leads to significant economic impact. Younger tourists from teenagers to those in their 20s are more responsive to trends and social norms, tending to visit popular places even when they are packed with tourists.Negative effects should be worked on immediately. Congestion is a problem for both locals and tourists. Economic benefits do not fully compensate for overcrowding and social conflict between locals and tourists. Korea must therefore work on maintaining the beneficial impact of short-form content but at the same time should reduce the challenges created by them. Doing so will eventually promote sustainability and improve Korea’s economy in the long term.
